A House that Could Walk

The Elder's Last Word. The old man rose slowly, cleaning sand from his pants. He turned toward the little wood house as though taking a look at an old friend.
" One day," he said, "people gon' forget what this home actually imply. They gon' think it was simply pretty wood and bright paint. However you-- you write the story now. Ensure they remember.".
He paused, letting the sea-grape leaves rustle in the stillness.
" This house is we. All the shifting, all the enduring, all the dreams we pack up and carry from one place to the next. When you comprehend that, you understand Barbados.".
And with that, he left-- sluggish, constant, calm-- like a guy who carried his own home inside him.
This story belongs to the much deeper cultural journey explored in Rogues in Paradise and the RoguesCulture Identity Series.
